When you see falling leaves, it is the season for wild boar, pheasant and venison. When days are good, probably a bottle of old Echezeaux would be ideal. When days are uncertain, certainly an old bottle of Cote Du Rhone red would also be nice.
Normally in the same wine region, red will be more full bodied and powerful than the white. However, Rhone white, most of the time, is more overwhelming than red. I borrow my tea classmate ‘s quote: very “crowded “.
Perhaps my die hard fans will remember one of my best selections: Xavier Vins Chateauneuf Du Pape Blanc, an assemblage of 7 grapes with multi layer harvest and vinified in 3 groups. It is no doubt spectacular.
Today, I take pride to recommend this lovely old vine white to you: Chateau Landra Ventoux Blanc les Boutieres 2016.
Connoisseurs deceive old burgundy red as foxy and jammy. Such character is rare with white. Yet in this young bottle of Ventoux white is very animal and marmalade. Credits should go to the old vine. Of course it mingles with fragrance of white flowers and apricot.
Although it is an assemblage if 4 varietals : Grenache Blanc , Marsanne, Viognier and Clariette Blanche , the evolution in the glass is wonderful . It is so versatile that it pairs well with , from dim sum to seafood to poultry to red meat, and even dessert .
It costs less than HKD300 per bottle. How can you miss it?
